ABOUT US

Ghetto Ruff was established in the late 1980s when Lance Stehr (current managing director) formed Cape Town-based hip hop pioneers, Prophets Of Da City (P.O.C). Their fusion of African and American ideas was crucial in crafting the sound of SA hip-hop.

Lance Stehr has a long-standing career in the Music Entertainment and Film / TV production industries and has over the past 35 years been responsible for releasing and distributing over 300 Records/ Albums.

His most notable talent is his ability to discover untapped talent and nurture Industry Icons. His music career started in the late 1980’s when he put together the internationally renowned Cape Town based Hip Hop Political group Prophets of Da City ( POC) to fight apartheid through Music.

The group enjoyed success both in Europe and in South Africa, touring with the likes of the Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Chris Brown and more. The prolific group also secured a cameo performance in the Dangerous Ground film with Elizabeth Hurley and Ice Cube.

Born in South Africa, Lance left for London in the late 70’s to pursue a career in the film and entertainment industry. This experience resulted in POC winning a Cannes Film Award in 1997 for Best Music Video from Africa. Lance furthermore also played a pivotal role in the International Oscar Winning Film Tsotsi where he was the music consultant for both the Film and the Sound Track.

Lance Stehr has maintained to build the biggest artists, brands, and award winning products consistently over the last 35 years, VUSI NOVA, NTANDO , NATHI MANKANYI , ZOLA, MAPAPUTSI, MZEKEZEKE, DJ CLEO, PITCH BLACK AFRO, MGARIMBE.

Stehr was able to expand and grow the label into the premier Kwaito label in the country. R&B star Ishmael was born out of POC and in 1996 helped Ghetto Ruff Records discover and nurture numerous kwaito stars, resulting in hundreds of awards. Ghetto Ruff has since maintained its standards of understanding current trends and talent selection. Many of the artists under Ghetto Ruff have been nominated for awards, gained international exposure and progressed in their music, business, and production careers. The label has been home to talents such as Malik, Jozi, Zola, Bongani Fassie, Bricks, Pitch Black Afro, RJ Benjamin, Ishmael, Gumshev, Da L.E.S, Young Uz, Ruff X and more.

Some of Lance’s Notable Accomplishments in Music are:

1988 - Formed PROPHETS OF DA CITY

1992 – 550 000 student covered in ANTI–DRUG school tour

1993 – Toured 750 000 students in SA Rapping for Democracy Tour before elections.

1994 – POC performed at inauguration of President Nelson Mandela

1995 – POC –SAMA AWARD: Best Rap Group

1995 – Won the BEST DIRECTOR AWARD AFRICA in CANNES for POC video UNDERSTAND WHERE I’m COM- ING FROM

1995 – NME top 10 single of the year UK: POC – Never Again
1996 – SKEEM – SAMA MUSIC AWARD: BEST KWAITO GROUP
1997 – Toured UK/Europe:  Fugees, James Brown, Ice Cube, with POC
1998 – Joined Universal Music to manage their local division over 200 artist releases

2001 – YIZO YIZO soundtrack 2002 – ZOLA on 5 – YIZO YIZO 2

MUTHALAND ENTERTAINMENT became a full 360 Production house in 2011 when the concept around the REALITY TV SHOW - JOZI MOVING THE CITY was created. This TV show did well receiving 2 nominations in 2013 – Africa Viewers Choice Awards and the SAFTAs (South African Film and TV Awards).
